Biography: Washington Sundar is an Indian cricketer who now plays for the Gujarat franchise in the Indian Premier League. He is a left-handed batsman who bowls off-spin from his right arm. He made his Indian cricket debut in 2017. Sundar was part of the team that won the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Early Years and Education of Washington Sundar

Washington Sundar was born on October 5, 1999, in Chennai, and will be 26 years old in 2025. Sundar's father, M. Sundar, is a cricketer who made the Tamil Nadu Ranji probables but was not selected for the final team. His sister, Shailaja Sundar (also known as M. S. Shailaja), is a professional cricket player. He attended St. Bede's Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School before earning an undergraduate degree from Chennai's Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science.

Washington Sundar's Career And Statistics

Sundar made his first-class debut for Tamil Nadu in the 2016-17 Ranji Trophy in October 2016. In October 2017, he got his first first-class century for Tamil Nadu against Tripura during the 2017-18 Ranji season. He was also picked to India's U-19 World Cup squad in 2016.

In 2017, the Rising Pune Supergiants (since defunct) recruited him to replace Ravichandran Ashwin. He made his Twenty20 debut with the Rising Pune Supergiants on April 22, 2017.

The Royal Challengers Bangalore purchased him in the 2018 IPL auction in January 2018. In October 2018, he was named to the India C squad for the 2018-19 Deodhar Trophy. Sunrisers Hyderabad spent Rs 8.75 crore for the Tamil Nadu all-rounder during the 2022 IPL auction. He played for SRH from 2022 to 2024.

International career

Sundar was selected for India's Twenty20 International team for the Sri Lanka series in November 2017. Previously, he was named to India's One Day International (ODI) squad for the same series after Kedar Jadhav suffered a hamstring injury. On December 13, 2017, he made his One-Day International debut for India against Sri Lanka, taking his first international wicket of Lahiru Thirimanne. On December 24, 2017, he debuted for India in the Twenty20 International against Sri Lanka. At 18 years and 80 days old, he made his T20I debut for India.

Sundar was picked to India's 2018 Nidahas Trophy team, which comprised matches against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Many praised him for his economical bowling during the powerplay, which averaged less.
